Synopsis

Design of new road pavements is well established, using tried and tested standard procedures. It is based largely upon allowable strains due to traffic at the bottom of the asphalt layers and at the top of the subgrade, in order to inhibit fatigue cracking of the asphalt and deformation of the soil. Design for maintenance may be less clear and can be simply an extension of the original design. Other assumptions may be made about, e.g. resistance to deformation of the asphalt and reflection cracking, in which mix design may play a large part. This is a follow up event to the successful symposium on Maintenance for Safety, Durability and Efficiency to investigate further the outcomes of that meeting. It will look at how design is practised in other sectors and in other countries, and will consider what impact the current review of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges may have on the issues surrounding pavement design and materials in the UK.

Attendees

This event will be of interest to those working in highway authorities, civil and military airport authorities, road and engineering consultants, university civil engineering departments, construction materials testing laboratories as well as asphalt suppliers and contractors, and road and airfield construction contractors.

SCI Members attending this meeting are able to claim CPD points.
